Being a good environmental citizen is important to MARTIN’S® Food Markets. From efforts that reduce waste in our stores to improving efficiencies in energy usage and distribution systems, we are always looking for ways to lessen our company’s and our customers’ impact on our environment.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, MARTIN’S has designated the entire month of April as a celebration of Earth Day. For every reusable shopping bag purchased in April, MARTIN’S will donate five cents to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to help keep our communities clean and green.

MARTIN’S reusable shopping bag program is an option for customers that encourages conservation and reuse, and reduces waste. A single reusable shopping bag can hold more than three plastic bags’ worth of groceries, significantly cutting down on the approximately 900 plastic bags the average American household uses in one year.

We collect plastic shopping bags from our customers to be recycled as part of our Bags to Benches program. Containers are available in the vestibules of all MARTIN’S stores. For the past 10 years we have been turning your plastic bags in to park benches and with your help have donated over 1,200 benches to local communities and organizations. MARTIN’S is also partnering with the Organic Trade Association’s national Go Organic campaign to raise awareness about organic foods and food practices. Look for FREE coupon books on all your favorite Organic products while supplies last. MARTIN’S own natural and organic brand, Nature’s Promise is available at all stores.

Since 2001, MARTIN’S has worked with the New England Aquarium to offer high quality seafood from sustainable sources. Our partnership involves auditing our seafood sources for environmental impact and long-term sustainability. We call this program Choice Catch.

MARTIN’S isn’t just green for the one month of April, but all 12 months throughout the year. MARTIN’S recycles shrink film, plastic bags, and cardboard. We’re also cutting down on our energy consumption by using energy efficient light bulbs and turning lights down during off hours.

Our trucks run on bio-diesel fuel and are programmed with anti-idling mechanisms that automatically turn off ignitions after five minutes of idling to conserve fuel and improve air quality.

A majority of MARTIN’S fuel stations now offer E10, an ethanol blend gasoline, which reduces carbon monoxide emissions by up to 30%.

Make a change today to help sustain tomorrow. Try MARTIN’S own brand Nature’s Promise as well as the many national brand products such as low energy light bulbs, earth friendly cleaning products that are available for sale in our stores everyday.
